‘Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness.’

An in-person conversation on ‘Hope’ with Brazilian humanitarian practitioner, Bruna Kadletz, Director and co-founder of Círculos de Hospitalidade, visiting the UK from her home in Southern Brazil.

We live in troubled and dark times, marked by countless crises: wars, climate emergency, humanitarian crises (hunger and refugees), urban violence, pandemic, social inequality, and so many others.  In the face of this dark and discouraging scenario, is it possible to remain hopeful? Can hope be more than a passive state, of sitting and waiting for change – can it become an active state full of vision that moves us towards the change we want to see and be in the world?  Cultivating hope is action. It is a mature and humble practice that elevates our worldview to consider the well-being of the whole and include future generations.

By sowing the seeds of hope now, we are planting the seeds of a future that we may never be able to glimpse, taste, and enjoy. It is a practice of offering our service to the whole, to the unknown, to the future children of Earth, without expecting anything in return.

How can we cultivate and sustain hope that is both alive within us and expressed through our actions? And how do we integrate this vision and practice into our daily lives and work?

In this evening conversation, Bruna offers practices and shares some of the lessons learned from her years of humanitarian work on how to stay balanced and hopeful in the face of human suffering and challenges.

This event is inspired by the blog piece Sowing Seeds Now (Bruna Kadletz) and the book The Book of Hope (Jane Goodall and Douglas Abrams)
