St Ethelburga's

Centre for Reconciliation and Peace

faith is a source of conflict... and a resource for transforming conflict

the tent

A remarkable place where different faiths can meet to explore their differences as equals. It is a new space for a new type of conversation.

The wasteland behind St Ethelburga’s Centre, derelict since the 1993 bomb, has been transformed into an unexpected and private space dedicated to the meeting of faiths. The Tent is based on Bedouin tradtions and was made of goats hair in the Middle East. It was generously provided by the Co-Exist Foundation

Regular events take place there to which all are welcome. it is often open during the day for quiet contemnplation and there are peroids of medittaion most days.

a unique space,

The Tent is an experimental meeting space where people of different faiths can come together to explore differences, transform conflicts, and to build firm foundations for collaboration.  The programme includes inter-faith dialogue and discussion, analysis of sacred scripture, devotional gatherings, meditation, storytelling and music.

the desert in the city

The unusual 16-sided structure is covered in goat’s woven hair and uses traditional Bedouin construction techniques.  It has been designed by Prof. Keith Critchlow, a world expert in sacred geometry, who was charged to create a "sacred" space without using the symbols of any specific religion. He has used the universal languages of geometry, algebra, astronomy and harmony to create a perfectly proportioned space which draws on the traditions of Al-Andalus - Southern Spain during the middle ages, where Jews, Christians and Muslims shared the space in relative peace for 300 years. The interior is carpeted with rugs woven in places of conflict throughout the world and it sits in a tranquil peace garden.  We have created a place of beauty and peace, which expresses the values of compassion and non-violence at the heart of all religious traditions.

an international partnership

Artists and crafts people from several different countries have contributed to the design. Tthe Tent itself was made in Saudi Arabia. Seven stained glass windows, have been made by Keith Barley and Helen Whittaker of Barley Studio. Mosaic tiling was hand-made in Morocco. Builders Calabasas employed highly skilled craftsmen to insert new windows in the garden walls. Garden Designer Sylvia Crawford added the finishing touches to create an Andalucian atmosphere.
