Music and Conflict Transformation

Workshop led by Prof. June Boyce-Tillman (University of Winchester)

This workshop will consist of practical exercises which will then be discussed and analysed. It will use the activities of listening, improvisation and performance both singing and instrumental. It will examine how various aspects of the musical experience can and have been used in the resolution of conflicts, drawing on the international symposium edited by Olivier Urbain, (2007), Music and Conflict transformation: Harmonies and Dissonances in Geopolitics, (London: I. B. Tauris ).

It will examine music to encourage such the development of such concepts as empathy and collective vulnerability. It will use musics from a variety of cultures including African drumming, Western classical and various chanting traditions.

Participants who play instruments are encouraged to bring them but no musical expertise is required.
