Getting your message across in the media equips delegates with the tools to secure regular and positive media coverage for their peace-related activities. The session will provide a fun yet intensive introduction to the different media, tips and tricks to secure coverage and improved press release writing and media relations skills.

Who is this training for?

Getting your message across in the media is for organisations and individuals that experience difficulty in securing regular and positive coverage in the media they desire. The course is also for anyone who would like to hear from a leading national press journalist and network with people in similar roles and organisations.

Guest speaker

Michael Binyon has been a leader writer on The Times since 1991. Until February 2000 he was also for nine years the paper's diplomatic editor, following 15 years abroad as a foreign correspondent. He joined The Times in 1972, as a reporter on the home news desk, moving to the foreign desk a year later and reporting on the 1973 Arab-Israeli war from Amman and Cairo and from Portugal in 1975. Seconded to the Times education supplements, he spent two years in Washington from 1975-77. As well as attending most international summit meetings, writing about world affairs and travelling, he now writes many of The Times editorials on foreign affairs and also transport. He is also a regular broadcaster for the BBC and for a number of overseas radio and television channels.

• Press release writing workshop
• Networking lunch

The trainer

 

Simon Cohen is director of global toleranceand a freelance writer on religious affairs. Simon has run media training courses at the Parliament of the World Religions in Barcelona (2004) and the World Spirit Forum in Arosa (2005). He has also run national and regional media trainings sessions in London with national broadcasters and journalists as guest speakers. Simon conceived, presented and trained at the first National Conference on the Media and a Multi Faith Society in London (2004).

Simon is honorary Media Director for the International Communications Forum, a global organisation that promotes the ethical role of the media in society.

Mediaweek magazine voted Simon one of the top young media professionals in Great Britain in 2003 and 2004. He has received awards from UnLtd and the Millennium Awards Trust as one of the leading social entrepreneurs in the UK.
