Does your mind drift away sometimes when other people are talking to you? Do you sometimes find yourself making unhelpful judgements about people whilst listening. Are you sometimes to quick to offer your advice? What does "being present" to someone else really mean for you?

A workshop to enhance your ability to really listen to other people

 

Who is this training for?

"Listening" is for anyone who wants to develop their ability to be present for, and be a supportive listener to other people. Listening is a key skill for most kinds of "helping work" from counselling, mediation and advice-giving but a good listener is welcome in many other situations. It is a fundamental skill for any- kind of peace-making venture.This course is aimed at anyone who is aware they want to be a better listener..

Format

The workshop will be a process-orientated and highly participative, drawing out the inherent experience of participants in a structured and supportive way. The programme will will include:

  • getting feedback on being a listener
  • exploring stories of great listeners (with examples from cinema)
  • listening to Beethoven as a model for all listening
  • sharing simple techniques for enhancing your listening skills

The trainers

 

Simon Keyes (above) is Director of St Ethelburga's Centre. He has an extensive track record of running voluntary organisations concerned with homelessness, mental health and crime prevention. He worked for a while promoting Christian meditation and as a video maker.

Masana D'Souza is an international organisational development consultant, facilitator and mediator, having worked in a wide variety of settings around the world. She is a past Executive Director of Mediation UK and spent time as a Winston Churchil;l Fellow examining conflict resolution strategies in South Africa.
