faith is a source of conflict... and a resource for transforming conflict

faith & citizenship training

FACT is a joint training programme for leaders of Christian, Muslim and Jewish faith communities in East London.  It explores practical ways in which communities can study scripture and work together more effectively in London and promote civic peace.

London has a great tradition of giving home to persecuted people from all over the world and from all faith communities. This tradition is now under threat as bombs, cemetary desecrations and violent arrests divide communities and threaten the lives and liberties of Londoners. In the light of this we believe it is more important than ever for Jews, Christians and Muslims to work together to pursue the good of the city.

Faith & Citisenship Training

A NEW APPRoach TO INTER-FAITH COLLABORATION

FACT is divided into three components:

* Talking Together:  Scriptural Reasoning.
The most important aspect of each of the Abrahamic religions is the divine revelation preserved in their sacred books, the Torah, the New Testament and the Qu’ran.  We will use the practice of Scriptural Reasoning, in which members of each of the three Abrahamic faiths share and explain what their holy scriptures have to say on issues of common concern for citizens of London.
* Living Together:  Faith and Citizenship.
In the pluralist environment of London, where faith is in exile and no one religion dominates, how is one to live within the city as a good Muslim, Christian or Jew? The course explores the unnapreciated civic inheritance provided by the ancient City of London and then examines the relationship between the Abrahamic faiths and the citizenship tradition.
* Working Together: Community Organising.
Joint action by different faith communities has the power to transform the community and city.  The course includes practical training in community organising from London Citizens, using role-play, performance and participation.

WHO IS IT FOR?

FACT is for men and women in leadership positions, both clerical and lay, in Christian, Muslim and Jewish faith communities in East London.  The course will be run for two groups of 12 people, one for women only. The course is designed for leaders who wish to see their communities have more power and who wish to shape their civic environment in alliance with other people of faith
